Hair Loss After Pregnancy

Hair Loss After Pregnancy

Hair loss after pregnancy is quite common and affects more than fifty percent of new moms. But it can be very disturbing, especially to a first time mother. This is something they don’t tell you about pregnancy and childbirth and you’ll find out after you experienced it. The condition is known as Telogen Effluvium (TE). It affects Mom’s because of hormone fluctuation following childbirth.  During pregnancy some hair is pushed from its resting phase into a growing phase. After childbirth this hair falls out causing extreme hair loss after pregnancy in many cases.

Hair loss that happens after pregnancy is very annoying. It generally occurs three months after delivery. Hair can come out in clumps. The discovery is oftentimes frightening to those who experienced it. Handful of hair coming off when you shower will alarm you, but don’t worry your problem will fade away after three to four months or longer for some of you. Your problem is temporary unless you have other undiagnosed condition.
Regrettably, losing your hair after pregnancy has no cure. There are remedies for normal hair loss but none of these helpful products will work on your hair. Fortunately, the hair loss after pregnancy is usually not permanent and it will grow back. However, some of you will not fully recover the bald spots in a few months. Don’t panic though and be patient, it may just take longer to grow your hair. You can be vitamin and mineral deficient too. Start eating food rich in anti-oxidant to nourish your hair follicles. Practice yoga and meditation to calm your mind and body. Don’t stress yourself.

Check with your doctor if your hair loss is relentless. You can be dealing with hypothyroidism. It’s a condition where your body does not have enough thyroid hormone. In addition to hair loss, other symptoms may include fatigue, inability to lose weight, hoarseness, depression, weight gain, constipation, memory loss, and etc. Again, these symptoms are quite common among women that are within months of just having a child, so the hair loss after pregnancy is most likely caused by the pregnancy itself.  However, if you are concerned contact your doctor to express your questions and possibly have some tests done to ease your mind.
