Surviving Riyadh

Job Resignation

Job Resignation

Meanwhile, packets from HCA started to arrive. I called my former supervisors and requested for references. I made an appointment with my doctor for my medical exams. Specified tests had to be performed. Next, my dentist. The police clearance was obtained from the L.A. Police Department. I sent my passport to Knoxville, Tennessee to be processed. The worst part was to inform my supervisor that I was resigning. It had to be done as soon as possible.  He needed time to find a replacement for me.

Early one Monday morning, I approached my supervisor and told him that I needed to talk to him. He asked me if I could wait. He was getting ready to fly to Washington, D. C. He was a member of a panel that approve government grants.

I told him I had accepted a job offer. I planned to leave the end of November. He couldn’t believe it. He had two months to hire my replacement but the problem was, I was involved with three projects. It was impossible to get a replacement with my expertise. He asked me where I was going. I told him Saudi Arabia. He asked what made me accept the job. Did I know anything about their culture. I told him everybody opposed my decision, however, I had to do it. I didn’t want to look back later asking myself, what if I accepted the job.

He understood how I felt but thought it would be dangerous for me to go there by myself. He would notify the Personnel Office. He had somebody in mind to operate the instrument but he needed to be trained. My other projects would be distributed to different sections. I apologized for putting him in this situation and that I spent sleepless nights debating whether to accept the job or not. He understood my situation. I had to do what I thought was best for me. I thanked him feeling so guilty.
